Evidence-Based Concussion Management
The presentation will be covering the signs and symptoms of concussion, diagnostic measures, treatment and long term consequences. A short business meeting will follow.

2018 Spring Meeting

The 2018 Spring MEDLI Meeting will take place on Thursday, June 14th at New York Institute of Technology-Old Westbury. The speaker will be Hallie Zwibel, Assistant Professor and Director of Sports Medicine at NYIT/COM. His talk will be on concussions.

More to follow in the coming months, but be sure to save the date now!

About the Presenter:

Hallie Zwibel specializes in family practice. He is the team physician for NYIT as well as the director of its Center for Sports Medicine. Zwibel earned his bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University in 2007. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2011 and completed his residency in family practice at North Shore-LIJ Plainview Hospital in 2014. During his residency, Zwibel completed the Training in Policy Studies and Physician Leadership Institute fellowships.

Open Access and New Modes of Scholarly Communication
Darren Chase, Scholarly Communications Librarian at Stony Brook University, will be speaking on the topic of Open Access. Darren’s presentation will examine emerging ‘open’ initiatives that challenge traditional modes of research practice and scholarly communication, particularly open science, open data and open peer-review.

The Science Behind Medical Marijuana

Dale Deutsch, PhD, Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Stony Brook University, will share his expertise on the subject of marijuana and its usage in medicine. During his talk he will: discuss the differing effects of the two primary cannabinoids THC and CBD, examine the forces impeding government approval of medical marijuana research, explore the history of the medical marijuana, and discuss future possibilities for research.  Bring your questions!

Join us for this “train the trainer” class, which is designed to help librarians assist their older adult patrons find health information. Discover techniques for teaching older adults to use computers and to find health information on the Internet, learn what makes a website senior-friendly; plan library programs on senior health topics; and find out about some recommended health websites for older adults.

Participants will:

  • Learn about the reasons it is important to better assist their older patrons.
  • Be able to evaluate health information resources based on usability issues that affect older adults.
  • Learn and practice techniques for teaching older adults to look for health information on the Internet.
  • Be able to research health information for older adults on online resources from the National Institutes of Health and other recommended websites.

What is Palliative Care?
Guest Speaker: David Wollner, M.D.

This talk will review the history and evolution of hospice and palliative care, with a focus on more recent developments in the USA, and a projection of the field’s future.

About the Speaker:
David Wollner MD, FACP, AGSF, Team Physician for the Palliative Care Service of the South Nassau Communities Hospital. He has thirty years of experience in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He is trained and board certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, Geriatric Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He has been elected to Fellow status in the American College of Medicine, the American Geriatrics Society, the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Wollner serves on the American Geriatrics Society Bioethics Committee and was a recent scholar to the NYU/ Montefiore program in Bioethics and the Medical Humanities. He has published articles and book chapters in his field and has presented lectures on Hospice and Palliative Medicine throughout the United States and Western Europe.
